Welcome Back

I hope everyone had a relaxing Spring Break. Hopefully it will feel like Spring soon! We finished The Wizard of Oz and are beginning a new unit on Biographies. One of the skills we will work on is how to summarize. The children will be reading different biographies and working on different biography projects. As a class, we will be reading the biography of Jane Goodall.  We will also be working on a personal narrative that we began already. The students will be receiving a rubric this week so that they will better understand the expectations for their story. In math we will be beginning a unit on fractions. We will be concentrating on fractions of a whole and fractions of a set.

We are looking forward to a lot of fun later in the week for Purim!

Have a great week everyone.

January 17th Update

It was great to have most of the students back in school this past week! In English, we are continuing our novel study of the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy has just melted the Wicked Witch and we are on the way back to Oz with her broomstick! We have also been working on how to use similes to improve writing by making it more visual for the reader. This week we will be learning about how to correctly use commas in writing.

In math, we finished a geometry section on polygons. This week we will be learning regrouping strategies for counting large amounts. We also worked on a situational program last week and are practicing the different steps on how to break it down to be more manageable. A new problem of the week is now posted.

Have a great week everyone!

We’re Off to see the Wizard!

This week we began our novel study of the Wizard of Oz. The students were very excited! We have been learning how to “show, don’t tell” in writing, and we began by writing about the twister scene which we watched with no sound. The students did a fabulous job describing it! It’s wonderful to see them trying to add the different literary techniques and Words of the Week that we have been learning about.

In math, we are working on subtraction with regrouping into the thousand’s place and I am very impressed with how well the students are doing. We will continue this week and work on some application problems as well. I look forward to “meeting” you all at our interviews on the 24th. Have a great week.

Welcome Back!

It was nice to have the students back in class today! They were all happy to see each other in person. I just wanted to update you on what we are doing in class. We have finished our unit on place value and have begun discussing and working on addition and subtraction strategies. We will also be doing our first situational problem together as a class this week.

In English we are continuing to work on good writing. We have now added Idioms to our repetoire and the students are working hard to incorporate them into their writing. We will be finishing Drake Blake and do some writing about bullying as well as class discussions. There will also be a new Problem of the week posted later in the week. Reading log will come home again next week.

Have a great week.

September 29th 2020.

I hope everyone is doing well. This week in school we are finishing up our unit on Place Value and playing some games and IXL to solidify the concepts. Next week we begin symmetry, reflections and frieze patterns. In English, we have begun looking at different elements of writing. Today we learned all about onomatopoeia (you can ask your children what that means) and we did a leaderboard challenge. The teams got points if they could come up with onomatopoeia words that the other teams didn’t find! Look for a seesaw activity tomorrow! Have a great week.

3A Update

I hope everyone had a nice Rosh Hashana! The students wrote all about it in their journals today. This week we are continuing to look at place value and how to decompose numbers. We have also begun working on application problems and learning how to find the important information and break down the problem into manageable pieces.

In English we are continuing to read and respond to Jake Drake Bully Buster. We did some writing about a photo from National Geographic Photo of the Day collection. The students were very creative and tried hard to include our new word of the week IMMENSE into their writing.

We had our first weekly challenge for our Leaderboard last week and many students have already completed some of their sidequests for extra points!

A reminder that the students should be reading a minimum of 4 days a week for at least 10 minutes and filling out their reading logs. Their reading logs will come home every second week.

Have a great week!

This week in 3A

I’m looking forward to a great week in 3A! This week we will choose our names for our teams on the Leaderboard and we will have our first team challenge activity! We will also begin a short novel study of Jake Drake Bully Buster by Andrew Clements. We will reveal our new word of the week as well. In math we are learning place value into the 1000’s. The students each have their own place value manipulatives to reduce sharing of materials in class. The Problem of the Week will still be up this week for those who want a chance to complete it. Have a great week everyone!
